He eventually came home. It was mid-afternoon, when I heard his car pull into the driveway. I had used the time to gain control of my feelings, and when I heard the car, I sat down at the dining table where I could see him enter and pretended to look through my phone.
He stopped in the entrance to the living room, his laptop bag over his shoulder, a hangdog expression on his face. He didnât say anythingâno greeting, no apologyâjust stood there like a dog caught peeing on the carpet. His shoulders were slumped, his eyes unable to maintain contact with mine.
I kept my face blank, despite the turmoil of emotions running through me, and stared him down.
Eventually, he said, âHi.â
âHi.â
Hovering halfway between the hallway and the living room, he didnât say anything else.
âWhere did you go?â
âJust out.â He stuck his lip out, shrugged, and looked away. âDriving, walking.â
Yeah, I know exactly what youâve been doing.
I put my phone down. âHad lunch?â
He nodded.
Yes, I bet you did, you selfish... I struggled to keep my anger in check. I nodded toward the kitchen.
âI kept something for you.â
âThanks, Iâll have it later.â
Suit yourself. âOkay.â
He hesitated, not sure what to do, then walked into the kitchen. I watched him carefully as he took a glass, filled it with water from the tap, and took a sip.
I waited.
He took another sip, then reached over to the covered plate I had left for him. I sat forward ever so slowly, eager to catch his reaction. He lifted the cover and... there!
I had cooked him an omelet with mushrooms on the side.
Even across the dining room, I could see his eyes widen, a flush spreading across his cheeks. The glass in his hand shook ever so slightly but enough to notice.
Got you, you evil bastard.
He turned and looked at me before quickly looking away. His eyes darted back, and his mouth formed into the worst fake smile Iâd ever seen.
âIt looks nice, thank you.â
I nodded, keeping my eyes on him, wondering what he would do next. He gulped down the glass of water before refilling it from the tap and taking another sip. I might have imagined it, but it looked like his forehead was sweating.
My husband was planning to poison me with mushrooms. Well, we would have to see about that. From now on, I would watch him like a hawk, but judging by how useless he was with everything else, I doubted he would succeed.
âDo you want to watch something?â I interrupted the uncomfortable silence.
Pretend everything is normal, then catch him in the act.
